Beyond Berlin: Why Potsdam Deserves Your Attention on Your Next German Adventure

On the second leg of our Tour of Northern Europe in April 2023, we had the pleasure of visiting Potsdam. The rich history and cultural opportunities in this city captivated us, and we were especially delighted with the exceptional photographic opportunities that presented themselves. Allow us to share our experiences and impressions of Potsdam with you.

Potsdam is a city located in the state of Brandenburg, Germany, just southwest of Berlin. The history of Potsdam dates back over a thousand years to the early Middle Ages when it was first mentioned in historical records as a Slavic settlement. Throughout the centuries, Potsdam served as a royal residence for the Prussian kings, who transformed the city into a grand imperial capital with impressive palaces, gardens, and architectural landmarks.

One of the most significant periods in Potsdam's history occurred in the late 17th century when the city was chosen by King Frederick William I as the site of his summer palace. The king commissioned the construction of a grand baroque palace, the Schloss Sanssouci, which became the centerpiece of a vast network of royal gardens and parks. Under the reign of King Frederick II, known as Frederick the Great, Potsdam continued to flourish as a center of culture and innovation. The king commissioned several other notable architectural landmarks, including the Neue Palais and the Chinese Tea House, and attracted leading artists, scientists, and intellectuals to the city.

In the 20th century, Potsdam played a pivotal role in the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. During the Cold War, the city was situated in East Germany and served as the headquarters of the Soviet military administration. The famous Potsdam Conference of 1945, which took place at the Cecilienhof Palace, was a crucial meeting between the Allied leaders Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, and Joseph Stalin that helped shape the post-war world order.

Today, Potsdam is a vibrant and dynamic city, attracting visitors from around the world with its rich history, cultural heritage, and natural beauty. The city's numerous palaces, gardens, and architectural landmarks have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city continues to be a hub of innovation and creativity, with a thriving arts scene and a bustling business community.

The Glienicke Bridge, located in Potsdam, Germany, played a significant role in the Cold War history as it became known as the "Bridge of Spies." During the Cold War, the bridge was used as a checkpoint between East Germany and West Germany, and it was also where numerous spy exchanges took place between the Soviet Union and the United States.

The Glienicke Bridge

The first exchange on the bridge occurred in 1962, when American U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was swapped for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. The event garnered worldwide attention and was later depicted in the film "Bridge of Spies." The Glienicke Bridge became a symbol of the tensions and intrigue of the Cold War, with numerous other spy exchanges taking place there over the years.

In addition to the spy exchanges, the bridge was also the site of several high-profile defections, including that of East German soldier Conrad Schumann, who famously leapt over the barbed wire fence to defect to West Germany in 1961.

Today, the Glienicke Bridge remains a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who are interested in Cold War history and espionage. The bridge has been restored and renovated in recent years and continues to serve as a reminder of the tensions and conflicts of the past, as well as a symbol of hope and reconciliation for the future.

Where to stay

There are several options for parking a motorhome in Potsdam. Our choice was the https://www.wohnmobilstellplatz-potsdam.de, a dedicated motorhome parking area located in the northern part of the city. The park offers limited EHU points, but effective water and waste disposal facilities,

Some other popular parking spots include the Schloss Sanssouci parking area, which offers a convenient location close to the famous palace and gardens, and the Charlottenhof Palace parking area, which is located in a scenic park setting.

Potsdam certainly grabbed our attention , we think it will grab yours to.
